Subject: FINS News: Public Scoping for Fire Island National Seashore White-tailed Deer and Vegetation Management Plan open through July 24, 2011

The National Park Service (NPS) announced today a White-tailed Deer and
Vegetation Management Plan and its associated environmental impact
statement (plan/EIS) is being prepared for Fire Island National Seashore.
This plan/EIS will analyze a range of alternatives for managing deer to
reduce their impacts on native vegetation, forest regeneration, cultural
landscapes, and human-deer encounters within the boundaries of the
Seashore. The plan will be developed in accordance with the National
Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and other laws, NPS policies, and related
regulations. The desired outcome of the plan is to ensure the continued
integrity of the natural and cultural resources at Fire Island National
Seashore, while maintaining a white-tailed deer population within the
Seashore.

The first step in this process is an information gather phase called
scoping, where the public is invited to express opinions about the
information, issues, and alternatives that need to be addressed in this
plan/EIS.
