DIG WE MUST snow on fire island
 May 9, 2011

Welcome back. Seaview has been a very busy place all winter long. We experienced a very bad winter, with record snow fall, winds and rain. Luckily the damage to our community was minimal, with the exception of some moderate beach erosion and an (occasional) downed wire or tree.

Larry Mattiasen (the Seaview Manager) and his staff have undertaken several projects approved by the Seaview Board. This infrastructure work included bulkhead repairs on the southeastern portion of our Boat Basin; repaving of three (3) walks and intersections, including the appropriate grading that will eliminate future street flooding; and installation of a new fire hydrant by the Seaview ball field that was requested by the OBP Fire Department and Suffolk County Police Department for emergency and Medivac purposes.

The Verizon telephone pole in the middle of our walk between the Seaview Market and ferry dock is also being removed. A replacement pole has been installed several feet to the south, on the west side of our wagon park. LIPA has already relocated their cables to the new pole. As soon as Verizon transfers their phone wires and then removes the old pole, we will refinish the area with new pavers.

Because of very limited space in Seaview for staging these projects, the Bay Beach was used for storage of materials and equipment over the winter. Now that the work is nearing completion, the Bay Beach will be restored as a play space and swimming area by Memorial Day.

All our projects have been completed within the existing Seaview budget and will not incur any raise in our yearly charges.

REMINDER – The 2nd Annual Seaview “Welcome Back” party is this coming Saturday May 14th at Maguire’s at 6:00 pm. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are available at $70.00 each by contacting Joan Brown 212.362.5121 or at joanandjordan@aol.com. The tickets will be all inclusive of an open bar, cocktail hour, buffet dinner, beverages and desserts. Come see your friends and neighbors.

Previous Updates from 11/17/2010

I have included some pictures taken last week by our Seaview Manager Larry Mattiasen. Two of the pictures show flooding at high tide by the Ocean Beach Ferry due to a passing storm system. The last picture is of Seaview’s ferry basin during the same high tide, where the lack of flooding along this stretch of Bay Walk is attributable to the recent raising and re-paving of the SVA sidewalk infrastructure project.dig we must

Now that the season has come to a close, construction work has commenced on the next phase of the sidewalk reconstruction program. The following sections have been designated by an infrastructure sub-committee to be most in need of renovation. The recommendations were based a myriad of variables (flooding problems, safety issues, appearance, cracking, holes, etc.).flooding

A Street (between Baywalk and Central)

C Street (between Central and Neptune)

Neptune (from just east of B Street and ending west of D Street)

Ivy Walk (completing the project between Baywalk and the Bay)

The old concrete on these walks is currently being removed. The walks will then be raised, graded and resurfaced with the same pavers that were installed by the Seaview Ferry terminal. After this work is completed the Association will work with the homeowners on these streets to restore the entrances to their property.

Paving Projects

The Ivy Street pavers are done (see Ivy Walk picture below). Entryway apron restoration can now begin. Sand will be spread along the sides of Ivy Walk to cover the concrete curbs that were poured to prevent the paver movement as a result of vehicle traffic. Work on these final phases will extend into next week.

ivy pavingB Street paving is complete, but there is still some entryway work to do.

Sea grass was planted along the Fire Island ferry dock last week.

Wagon Park

This week-end you will notice work underway in the new wagon park extension, including the installation of railings, posts and girders which will be the foundation for the wood decking. Construction of the decking will begin after the materials arrive (estimated in the beginning of July).

The existing wagon park has become very crowded, but there will be temporary wagon space available in the new wagon area for the next few weeks. We will let you know in advance when wagons will need to be removed from the site to allow wood deck construction to begin.

Paving on BEACHWALD and IVY Streets

The paving project is completed on B Street, and restoration of the residential entryways is almost complete. The pavers on Ivy Street were started on Monday. Installation of the pavers began at Neptune (at south end of the street) and continued north on Ivy towards Baywalk. The masons started putting in the curbs along the walk today, but were interrupted by the weather. Tomorrow is a new day. We hope to complete the sidewalk and curbing by Friday, and the residential aprons by next week.

Wagon Park Extension

The new pipe railings are being installed at the D Street wagon park extension. The wood for decking the new area has been ordered, but estimated delivery will not be until after July 4th. We have noticed that people have been leaving their wagons on E Street and blocking public walks because of the reduced space in the old section. They have also been putting wagons on top of other wagons. The new ‘hitching posts’ will give homeowners more room to temporarily lock up their wagons, even though the wood decking will not be installed for another few weeks.

Signs will be erected requesting that homeowners leave their wagons on the northern-most railing. This will make it easier for us to close the area for the wood deck construction once the building materials arrive. This project will take us well into July.

Please let us know what you think about the changes you see happening around the community. Your feedback is important to the Board.

ferry-paversThe paver project at the ferry terminal is completed. The sidewalk is open for walking, bicycles and vehicle traffic. Final ‘touch-ups’ will be completed the early part of next week.

On Beachwald (B Street), the section of sidewalk between Central and Baywalk that is being replaced is ready for the new paver installation. This work will be completed by Memorial Day weekend, weather permitting.
On Ivy Street (I Street) between Baywalk and Neptune, the cement pavement has been removed and the first layer of gravel fill and reinforcing wire have been installed. The preparation will continue throughout next week, and we expect the new pavers will installed during the week of May 31st through June 4th.pavers

Residents on Ivy will have continuous access to their homes during the project. .

Those of you who have already ventured out to the beach to check your houses after the recent storms have no doubt noticed that the bulkhead along the south side of the ferry basin is undergoing much needed repair.

In order to complete the required structural work to reinforce the bulkhead, it was necessary to take up the Seaview sidewalk directly to the south of the bulkhead, all the way back to the wagon park.

The Ferry Co. and the Association are cooperating to expedite the bulkhead work so that we can then move as quickly as possible restore our sidewalk.

We will have a project update and more details for you at the General Membership Meeting on April 20th. Looking forward to seeing you there!

There will also be regular project updates on the Seaview website (www.seaviewfireisland.com)
