Dear Seaview Families:

The Seaview Bay Beach opens for the 2011 season this Saturday, June 25th!!!

Group swimming lessons begin Tuesday, July 5th and end on Thursday, August 25th, which will also be our Swimming Awards party.

TODDLER LESSONS will be held in the baby pool at 11:00am, Monday-Thursday. These lessons are designed to make your child comfortable in the water and provide a positive social experience for him/her. Parental involvement is crucial to your childs enjoyment and success.

RED CROSS LEVELS 1 & 2 will be taught in the bay with safety devices provided. Classes begin at 2:00pm, Monday-Thursday. These classes will be co-ed if numbers permit us to do so. If the classes exceed 6 children, we will break into boys, M&W and girls, Tu&Th. These classes last for one-half hour.

RED CROSS LEVELS 3 & 4 will begin at 3:30pm, after camp. M&W will be the boys classes, and Tu&Th, will be the girls classes. These classes last for one-half hour.

GUARD START CLASSES will be taught on Fridays, 3:30-4:30pm. The Red Cross has started a new course designed for advanced swimmers, 12-15 years of age. This curriculum teaches basic self safety around the water. Included in these classes will be first aid, CPR, and assessment of injuries. Swimming strokes and fitness will be emphasized. Students will receive workbooks and only serious swimmers should apply.

Meet the new Barber Sand Man. (Click here)sandman
Since the bay beach play area is built on landfill, we've been constantly plagued by the migration of glass
(dumped there decades ago) up thru the sand to the surface. A few years ago, the SVA lifted and sifted the top layer of sand, laid down a textile barrier and replaced the sand. That worked for a while, but the glass, helped by hydraulic pressure from the tides, returned.

An option presented to the BOD this year was the removal of the top 3-4 ft of sand, the placement of another layer of fabric covered by a 6 inch layer of crushed stone and yet another layer of fabric. The cost, including shipping the materials to FI, was prohibitive.

It's made in Connecticut by H. Barber and Sons. It arrived at the Bay Beach on a trial basis a couple of weeks ago and was recently tested by our community manager, Larry Mattiesen and various members of the BOD. It lifts the top layer of sand up and deposits it on a screen. Sand falls thru, material removed from the sand gets fed into a hopper at the rear of the machine. The pictures of the straining screen show how well it works, and as a bonus, the rocks etc. removed from the sand will be recycled into one of our paving projects.

sandmanThe game plan is to run the machine a couple of hours daily starting early in the season. At some point, we believe we'll get ahead of the glass migration, and cleaning the Bay Beach will become a weekly maintenance task, like mowing the Ballfield.
